Zero Waste

Today I read a blog from one of my new favourite bloggers The Real Supermum about blogging about your favourite bloggers;  just at the same time as I was thinking about one of my all time favourite bloggers My Zero Waste so what good timing that was.

The blog – well it’s a lot more than a blog – it’s amazing, is about how the one family have managed to really cut back on their waste – they are a true inspiration. With lots of tips to help you to help yourself do the same (at any level – even a little bit helps).

My family and myself took part in a Zero Waste week and managed to reduce our landfill rubbish to just one carrier bag for that week. This year it is the 5th-12th of September.

Our weeks rubbish

Since following this blog we compost our waste and grow some of our own food. We did recycle lots of things but now this is just collected by the Council in our blue bin – making lives much easier. Our council doesn’t collect foil still, and we have to take our water filter cartridges over to Argos – but it’s a lot better than it was.

Well bags are the reason I was reminded of this fabulous blog as when in McDonalds in Wales yesterday we noticed a flyer stating that they were going to start charging 5p on all bags – with the money going to charity from the 1st October 2011. This we feel is good but this is on paper bags too – and they can be recycled – but this still costs money and the environment. Upon reading the flyer it appears that this is something that the Welsh Government have instigated, so not just McDonalds in Wales. New figures apparently show that charging makes a real difference and is the way to go – link to article.

So what do you think to a 5p charge on bags? Will you welcome this happening in other parts of the World?

  1. Wow I am going to be really naughty here and say I am terrible and some times everything just gets thrown into the bin x

I actually love the idea of using it to grow your own things, maybe something I could get the kids involved in.

Fab post well done you x
